BAY AREA

TRANSPORTATION

WORKING GROUP

This is not by happenstance. The Bay Area is saddled with this increasing congestion because billions of transportation dollars have been wasted on ill-conceived pet projects instead of in addressing its transportation problems. See "Regional Boondoggles and Missed Opportunities".

So long as this half-baked, short-sighted regional transportation approach persists, the situation will continue to grow worse. On the other hand, with smart planning, political courage, persistence and hard work, a more balanced transportation system can evolve. For examples of what could and should be happening, read here.

Ms. Jennifer Ott, Chief Operating Officer of the large development planned for the western end of the City of Alameda was recently asked how Alameda could handle the additional traffic generated by big projects like hers. Her reply (to the Contra Costa Times on 12/11/2014) was instructive: "Alameda is not alone"...."The whole region is facing major traffic congestion issues that are going to have to be addressed."

She's right. As shown in the chart below, despite the tens of billions of State and federal transportation dollars that have poured into the Bay Area during the last 25 years, there has been neither any reduction in traffic congestion nor any increase in transit ridership.
